The Gossamer Condor evolved over a period of time through three distinct versions. Gossamer Albatross was his second human-powered aircraft, the first being the Gossamer Condor, which had won the first Kremer prize on August 23, 1977, by completing a 1-mile (1.6 km)-long figure-eight course. For thousands of years, human beings have watched birds soar through the skies and dreamed of one day flying in a similar fashion, using their own power. Design and development.
Dr. Paul B. MacCready and Dr. Peter B. S. Lissaman, both of Pasadena, California, designed the Gossamer Condor, which is made of thin aluminum tubes covered with mylar plastic and braced with stainless steel wires. The first version, known by MacCready as the Pasadena version, was a proof-of-concept aircraft which flew only once in the parking lot of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Inventor Paul MacCready brought that dream to life in 1977 when he created the world’s first human-powered aircraft, the Gossamer Condor.

The leading edges are made of corrugated cardboard and styrene foam.

The aircraft was designed and built by a team led by Paul B. MacCready, a noted American aeronautics engineer, designer, and world soaring champion. Gossamer Condor.
"It was just a big model airplane" MacCready said of the Gossamer Condor.. With a wingspan of 96 feet, the pedal-powered Gossamer Condor weighed only 70 pounds.
