The Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele is a large oil-on-oak panel painting completed around 1434–36 by the Early Netherlandish painter Jan van Eyck.It shows the painting's donor, Joris van der Paele, within an apparition of saints. The brothers (1) Hubert van Eyck, (2) Jan van Eyck and (3) Lambert van Eyck were all painters; a sister, Margaret, was also identified as a painter by van Vaernewijck (1568), who recorded that she was unmarried and was buried next to Hubert in Ghent. Jan van Eyck was born circa 1395. Jan van Eyck was an influential painter of the Early Renaissance. Among the earliest Dutch painters to use oil paint, the van Eycks developed glazing and wet-on-wet techniques that gave their pictures a greater sense of light and depth.

The work of the Van Eycks, epitomized in the Ghent Altarpiece, brought an unprecedented realism to the themes and figures of late medieval art. In 1425, he was employed under the service of Duke Philip, the Good of Burgundy.

There are little more than 20 works – portraits and devotional paintings – attributed to him, though he worked in Bruges as a court painter for Philip the Good of Burgundy. Little is known of van Eyck's origins, but he probably came from Maaseik, near Maastricht, and was of the gentry class. Jan van Eyck is credited with originating a style of painting characterised by minutely realistic depictions of surface effects and natural light.
