The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet in a prologue and three acts. Restaged by Artistic Director Karen Kain in 2006, The Sleeping Beauty is one of the National Ballet’s most treasured works and holds a singular place in the company’s history and the affections of its audience. It was based on Charles Perrault 's 1697 fairy tale " The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood ". “This Sleeping Beauty is a grand jewel in the National Ballet of Canada’s repertoire. Showy and opulent, it set off an unprecedented period of international touring and acclaim for the young company and its dancers and it remains a jewel in the National Ballet repertoire today. Rudolf Nureyev put The National Ballet of Canada on the map when he staged his own version of The Sleeping Beauty for the company in 1972. Marius Petipa and Ivan Vsevolojsky wrote the story of the ballet. Tchaikovsky wrote the music.
